NORM/TENORM Radiation Safety Officer Courses

Developed by Mark Krohn, MHP, CHP, the NORM/TENORM Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) courses are designed for individuals who direct or supervise NORM/TENORM programs and field activities or who will be listed as an RSO or Alternate RSO on a specific license. SC&A offers a 40-hour RSO course and two 8-hour refresher courses, one one shipping and one on instruments.

The 40-hour RSO course contains all components of the NORM/TENORM Surveyor course plus:

  • Detailed review Federal and state NORM/TENORM regulations, including the U.S. Department of Transportation requirements in 49 CFR 172.700, Subpart H
  • Worker protection and waste management plans and procedures
  • Available NORM/TENORM disposal options
  • Documentation and recordkeeping
  • Dosimetry
  • Regulatory notification requirements
  • Solid, liquid, and air sampling

Incumbent Worker Training Program (IWTP)
These courses are eligible for reimbursement under the State of Louisiana’s IWTP.
If you already have an IWTP administrator, click on your preferred course date in the course calendar and follow the IWTP instructions.

Students who successfully complete this course will earn certificates in NORM/TENORM Shipping, NORM/TENORM Surveyor, and NORM/TENORM Radiation Safety Officer.

The 8-hour refresher courses are designed for individuals who want to refresh their knowledge and meet regulatory requirements for training.

The Instrument Refresher course reviews:

  • Current and new regulatory requirements and guidance
  • Proper use of survey instruments and new survey instrumentation currently available
  • Survey documentation
  • Current worker protection practices

The Shipping Refresher course reviews:

  • Current and new regulatory requirements and guidance
  • Container and labeling requirements
  • Mixture rules and exemption limits
  • State-specific licensing and training requirements
